Dry Needling

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment technique used by physical therapists to relieve muscle pain, reduce tension, and improve movement. During treatment, a thin, sterile needle is inserted into tight or irritated muscles known as trigger points. This can help release muscle tension, improve blood flow, and decrease pain.

There is no medication injected during dry needling, the needle itself creates a therapeutic response within the muscle and nervous system.

How Can Dry Needling Help?

Dry needling is often used as part of a comprehensive physical therapy treatment plan to help patients recover faster and move more comfortably. It may help with:
  • Neck and back pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Shoulder pain
  • Hip and knee pain
  • Muscle tightness and spasms
  • Tendonitis and overuse injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Chronic pain conditions

What Does Treatment Feel Like?

Most patients tolerate dry needling very well. You may feel a small pinching sensation when the needle is inserted, a muscle twitch or cramping sensation as the trigger point releases, and/or mild soreness afterward, similar to a workout.

Treatments are typically brief and are customized to your comfort level and goals.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

Yes. Dry needling is performed using sterile, single-use needles by trained physical therapists. Your therapist will review your medical history and determine whether dry needling is appropriate for you.
Some temporary soreness or mild bruising can occur, but serious side effects are rare.

Why Choose Dry Needling?

Dry needling can be an effective option when pain or muscle tightness is limiting your daily activities, exercise, work, or sleep. When combined with hands-on therapy and corrective exercise, it can help improve movement and flexibility, decrease pain and muscle guarding, speed recovery from injury, and help you return to the activities you enjoy.
If you are dealing with persistent pain, muscle tension, or movement limitations, our physical therapy team can help determine whether dry needling is right for you.
